Barlo Hillen arbeitet als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und Dozent in der Abteilung Sportmedizin, Prävention und Rehabilitation. In seiner Forschungsarbeit widmet er sich der Erforschung der Anwendung der Infrarot-Thermografie in der Sportwissenschaft, der Thermoregulation und der Optimierung der digitalen Gesundheitsförderung und Bewegungstherapie.

Der Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt dabei in der Umsetzung und Erforschung des eigens definierten „Exercise-Radiomics“-Ansatzes. Exercise Radiomics beschreibt den Einsatz der Infrarot-Thermografie während der kardiopulmonalen Leistungsdiagnostik in Kombination mit weiteren leistungsphysiologischen Messmethoden und der automatisierten Auswertung umfangreicher, optischer Daten.
